Better WiFi for hundreds of trains under government plans

The UK government plans to upgrade WiFi on more than 1,400 main line trains using low-earth orbit satellites, aiming to boost connectivity from 50-60% to at least 90% of a journey [1]. The £57m investment follows successful trials with several major operators [1]. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to announce the rollout this summer, with the technology moving trains away from reliance on patchy 4G and 5G mobile networks [1]. A government source stated that "getting online while on a train has been a perennial annoyance for passengers" and that the upgrade would "rocket boost connectivity" [1]. The initiative is part of establishing the new umbrella body, Great British Railway [1]. Campaign groups welcomed the improvement but stressed that core passenger concerns are elsewhere. Bruce Williamson, a spokesman for Rail Future, said, "The key issues remain the cost of travel, overcrowding and reliability" [1]. Michael Solomon Williams of the Campaign for Better Transport called it a "real step change" that adds a "real USP to rail travel," but agreed fares and service reliability are the primary barriers [1]. The upgrade targets a significant leap in service consistency. For context, Via Rail Canada, a major intercity operator, reported an on-time performance of 85.4% in 2023 [3]. The UK's Great Western Railway (GWR), one of the trial operators for the new WiFi, manages a 1,997 km network and provided 89 million passenger journeys annually as of March 2025 [7]. GWR is a descendant of the historic Great Western Railway, founded in 1833 and once known as the "Holiday Line" for taking passengers to West Country resorts [8]. Reliable onboard internet is increasingly seen as essential infrastructure. The independent watchdog Transport Focus stated it is "no longer a 'nice to have'" [1]. This shift occurs within a UK internet landscape where access is governed by a combination of laws, regulations, and voluntary ISP measures [5]. The government's move aims to directly address connectivity "blackspots" that have long frustrated rail users [1].
