Top ethical hackers are using AI to win major competitions, but warn the technology may soon outpace human researchers in finding common software flaws.
Valentina Palmiotti, known as Chompie, was the most successful individual at the recent Pwn2Own hacking competition in Berlin, winning major prizes [1][2][3]. She and other champions now use AI tools to accelerate their work. Palmiotti employs them in her day job as a security researcher for IBM X-Force [2][3], while another big winner in Berlin, Orange Tsai, sees AI as an assistant that helps accelerate his research workflow [1][2][3]. The tools are proving powerful; Anthropic claims its AI model, Mythos, has found 1,600 vulnerabilities in hundreds of software programs [1][3]. Despite this capability aiding defenders, criminals are also using AI to speed up their attacks, though the vast majority of cyber-attacks still rely on long-established and simpler methods [2][3]. Palmiotti suggested human hackers are in a "sweet spot" where AI assists, but predicted new models would soon make competing for common vulnerabilities harder, stating she competed this year because it might be her "last chance" [1][2][3].
