Thousands of customers of Lloyds Banking Group reported being unable to access online and mobile banking services on Monday morning, according to the outage tracker Downdetector [1]. Problems began at approximately 1115 BST, Downdetector data showed [1]. Lloyds Banking Group, the UK's largest retail and commercial banking provider with 26 million customers, owns the affected brands: Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland [1]. The group has been contacted for comment. This incident follows a significant IT failure in March, where nearly half a million customers saw other people's transactions or had their data shared [1]. The group's structure is the result of major historical mergers. Halifax, founded as a building society in 1853, merged with the Bank of Scotland in 2001 to form HBOS [5][6]. HBOS was then acquired by Lloyds TSB in January 2009, creating the present-day Lloyds Banking Group [2][6]. Bank of Scotland, established in 1695, is the oldest operational bank in Scotland and the longest continuous issuer of banknotes in the world [7]. Following the 2009 takeover, it became a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group alongside Halifax [7]. As one of the UK's "Big Four" clearing banks, Lloyds Bank's operational reach is extensive, with major offices and data centres across cities including London, Birmingham, and Halifax [2]. The scale of the outage underscores the widespread impact when a major financial institution's digital services fail, affecting a significant portion of the British banking public.
