Nearly 500 people were seriously injured in e-scooter collisions in Great Britain in 2026, according to government statistics, as total casualties from the vehicles rose to 1,484.
The Department for Transport estimated that 485 people suffered serious injuries and 989 were slightly injured in crashes involving electric scooters last year [1][2]. Ten people, all e-scooter riders, were killed in those collisions, up from six in 2024 [1][2]. The overall casualty figure of 1,484 compared with 1,390 the previous year [1][2].
The e-scooter data was released alongside provisional figures for all road casualties in Great Britain in 2025. Those showed an estimated 1,556 fatalities in reported road collisions, a decline of 3 percent from 2024 [1][2]. Across all severities, 29,911 people were killed or seriously injured in 2025, an increase of 4 percent compared with the prior year, while total casualties reached 127,870 [1][2].
Rod Dennis, senior policy officer at the RAC, said the figures showed that "precious little progress has been made in reducing harm caused on our roads" [1][2]. He added that on average four people die on British roads each day [1][2].
In January, the Department for Transport announced a road safety strategy with a target of cutting the number of people killed or seriously injured by 65 percent, and by 70 percent for children under 16, by 2035 [1][2]. A government spokesperson said the department would consult on e-scooter regulations within the next year, noting that current law needs updating to ensure the vehicles are safe for all road users [1][2].
Under existing legislation, private e-scooters remain illegal in any public space, including roads and pavements. Rental e-scooters can be used only as part of the government's national rental trials [1][2].
